CCTV upgrades to bring super-fast broadband to Colchester town centre

Businesses in Colchester town centre are set to gain access to super-fast broadband next year.

Upgrades to Colchester's fibre optic CCTV network are set to bring faster broadband to the town centre in 2013.

The local council's cabinet revealed in March that it had agreed a deal that will see ITS Technologies make improvements to the existing CCTV infrastructure in order to deliver enhanced internet connectivity to businesses.

Work has not begun on the project half a year on from this announcement, sparking rumours that the plans had been shelved, but group chief commercial officer at ITS Roy Shelton told the Daily Gazette this is not the case.

"We're working with the council to try and see it through to closure as soon as possible," he insisted.

After the work has been completed, traders in Colchester town centre will be able to use the super-fast broadband network to send information and special promotions to shoppers with smartphones.

It is believed the CCTV upgrades will save the council an estimated £80,000, while attracting inward investment of an initial £250,000.
