CLA calls for universal obligation on broadband

Better broadband for rural communities is being called for by the CLA.

The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has called on the new Conservative government to deliver early progress on its pre-election commitment of delivering improved rural broadband services.

CLA President Henry Robinson argued the Tory campaign made claims that it would take significant action during its first 100 days of office and therefore the time has now come for these commitments to be tested.

He argued: "It is time for ministers to impose a universal service obligation of at least 10 Mbps on network providers for all rural homes and businesses. Ministers must end the competitive disadvantage faced by rural businesses."

Mr Robinson added there are too many people living and working in rural communities that suffer from non-existent broadband connectivity.

As a result, this is holding back many areas from receiving the benefits of living in a more connected and online world.
