Devon business leaders seek progress on broadband skills initiative

Thursday, August 8th 2013 by Paul France
The business community in Devon is becoming increasingly frustrated with delays in equipping local firms with broadband-related skills.

Delays in a scheme designed to help firms in Devon make the best use of broadband are causing frustration among the local business community.

BT and Broadband Delivery UK are running the Get up to Speed! contract in order to roll out the technology and show companies how to make the best use of it in order to drive growth.

However, the retendering of a contract regarding who will deliver the training has slowed the rate of progress, to the annoyance of businesses in the area, the Western Morning News reports.

Ian Bailey, Chairman of the Okehampton Chamber of Commerce, told the newspaper the government has promised it would improve broadband connectivity in rural areas.

This, he said, means any delays "would be disappointing, because it's vital that rural areas have connectivity".

Mr Bailey stated that members of the chamber that provide accommodation are particularly looking forward to receiving faster web connections, since it will make a "big difference to their business".

Pete Ashton of the Federation of Small Businesses added that training on how to make the best use of broadband is "paramount", since there is little point having a tool "if you don't know how to use it".
