Devon town gets fibre optic broadband upgrade

Monday, December 16th 2013 by Paul France
Honiton has been connected to fibre broadband, thanks to BT.

The town of Honiton in Devon has benefited from around 4,400 homes and businesses being connected to fibre optic broadband.

They have seen their exchanges upgraded as part of a nationwide project by BT, which has been the subject of a £2.5 billion investment throughout the UK.

Honiton joins a host of nearby areas that have already been connected to the superfast service, including Exeter, Exmouth, Sidmouth, Newton Abbot, Dawlish and Teignmouth.

Tiverton and Honiton MP Neil Parish explained that the rollout represented an important milestone for the town, which he expects to bring widespread benefits.

He hailed the next-generation network as a facility that could be utilised by businesspeople, homeowners and students alike, saying: "In today’s rapidly moving world, fast and sophisticated communications are absolutely vital. They are an essential part of future success.”

As BT's engineers continue to carry out essential installation works in the coming weeks, the number of Honiton properties connected is expected to reach 5,000.
