Digital Region seeks partner to run fibre broadband network

Communications providers are being invited to apply for the chance to run the Digital Region network.

A commercial partner is being sought by Digital Region to run its financially-troubled South Yorkshire fibre optic broadband network.

According to the Star, the operator is looking for a company to step in and run the network for seven years, with prospective applicants given until the end of this month to submit their strategies.

In its tender invitation, Digital Region said it is exploring the possibility of "title transfer" of the network, which was built with public money, but the organisation has refused to explain whether ownership could be passed on to the successful bidder.

"We are currently carrying out a commercially-sensitive process and are unable to disclose further details at this time," a Digital Region spokesman stated.

"A range of options is being considered that will provide the best possible outcome."

The Digital Region network comprises 350 miles of fibre optic cables rolled out across South Yorkshire.

It has struggled throughout its existence after failing to win the backing of any major internet service providers.
