Dumfries and Galloway to benefit from Digital Scotland

Tuesday, January 21st 2014 by Paul France
Around 8,000 premises in Dumfries and Galloway will benefit from fibre optic broadband.

Homes and businesses in the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland are set to be connected to fibre optic broadband, thanks to a nationwide project.

The Digital Scotland scheme will introduce the superfast service to an estimated 8,000 more properties between now and the summer, reports ITV.

Local homeowners and business people have welcomed the news, claiming it will enhance their daily lives both socially and financially.

Designs Cafe and Gallery in the Castle Douglas area of the region has been run by Lucy Carlow since 1996 and she explained the benefits the connection would bring to its customers, saying "for business generally in a rural area, it would make a big difference".

The upgrade is just one part of a drive to introduce the next-generation service to premises all over Scotland, with an estimated 39,000 expected to reap the rewards over the coming months.

It has been the subject of investment totalling £410 million.
