Eclipse boosts average fibre broadband throughput to 12Mbps

The internet service provider said customers are guaranteed to receive at least this speed during peak hours.

Eclipse Internet has updated its fibre optic broadband service in a move designed to boost the speeds received by its subscribers.

Customers will be able to benefit from "assured throughput speeds" of 12Mbps, the internet service provider claimed, which is almost double the 6.5Mbps capacity available on typical ADSL lines across the UK.

It means users will receive a minimum of 12Mbps throughput during peak browsing hours, although Eclipse has insisted they will experience "much higher speeds" at most times of the day.

Director Clodagh Murphy said this is the latest move in the development of its next generation fibre broadband product and stated it offers a number of advantages.

She explained: "[It] will enable businesses to benefit from increased connection speeds and services when streaming applications such as [virtual private network], video conferencing and VoIP."

The news comes after market intelligence firm In-Stat claimed bandwidth-heavy apps such as music downloads and online video streaming are driving demand for faster web access.
