Eclipse Internet launches fibre broadband coverage map

The internet service provider has revealed current and future levels of fibre broadband coverage.

Eclipse Internet has launched a map designed to show current and future levels of fibre optic broadband coverage across the UK.

The display illustrates home phone exchanges that are already able to access the technology, as well as those due to be hooked up within three, six and 12 months.

Rollouts planned for next year and any that have been deferred are also featured.

This announcement comes after Eclipse revealed new average speed data for its fibre optic cable broadband products. According to the internet service provider, its super-fast packages deliver typical throughput speeds of 35Mbps.

The figure is substantially higher than the 5.2Mbps average for the UK as a whole, recorded by telecoms industry regulator Ofcom in May 2010.

At the time the study was published, Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards said: "Actual speeds are often much lower than many of the advertised speeds, which makes it essential that consumers are given information which is as accurate as possible at the point of sale."
