Fibre broadband arrives in Keswick

Friday, August 8th 2014 by Editorial
Keswick residents can now access fibre broadband, thanks to the Connecting Cumbria rollout project.

Superfast fibre optic broadband has arrived in Keswick, with almost 1,400 local homes and businesses currently connected to the high-speed internet service.

The technology has come to the Lake District town thanks to the work of the Connecting Cumbria rollout programme.

There will be many benefits to fibre broadband's presence in the area, such as significant improvements regarding loading speeds and the ability for members of a household to simultaneously access the internet using multiple devices.

However, those based in Keswick are particularly looking forward to the boost in tourism it may bring, as this is currently the main source of income for the community.

Andrew Lysser of Cumbria County Council explained: "High-speed broadband gives us the opportunity to maintain and improve our position in tourism, commerce and education."

He congratulated network provider BT for its "persistent hard work to make this happen".

The superfast broadband rollout is set to continue in the area, with 3,000 Keswick premises set to be connected to the technology by the end of the summer.
