Fibre broadband for 17,500 Neath Port Talbot properties

Monday, July 29th 2013 by Paul France
The Welsh town of Neath Port Talbot is to be connected to BT's super-fast fibre broadband network.

Home and business owners in Neath Port Talbot are to benefit from a £2.5 billion programme that will see super-fast fibre optic broadband rolled out to 17,500 properties in the town by BT.

The telecoms provider has already connected nearby Briton Ferry, Gorseinon, Mumbles, Neath, Ravenhill and Sketty to the fibre network and will now add Neath Port Talbot to its portfolio as part of a plan to boost connectivity across the country, BBC News reports.

Local Council Leader Ali Thomas said fast broadband has become a necessity for almost everyone lately, so the announcement is sure to please a lot of people.

"Fibre broadband can also bring new opportunities and a competitive edge to our businesses, so this is very welcome news for the town," she added.

BT's Ann Beynon commented that faster connectivity will be particularly useful when it comes to file and data transfers, conferencing and computer backup.

Back in February, BT revealed that Bangor would be the first place in Wales to gain access to high-speed fibre broadband under the Superfast Cymru project, with Welsh Business Minister Edwina Hart unveiling the first cabinet in the city's High Street.
