Fibre broadband rollout 'could create 1,800 jobs for north Wales'

The rollout of super-fast broadband could create 1,800 jobs in north Wales.

Hundreds of jobs could be created across north Wales by the fibre optic broadband partnership between BT and the Welsh government.

The Superfast Cymru initiative is aiming to bring high-speed internet access to 96 per cent of homes and businesses in Wales - a major improvement on the current situation in the north, with a fifth of properties in the county of Anglesey stuck with speeds of less than 2Mbps.

Fibre broadband is already available to 75,000 premises in north Wales and this figure is increasing every month.

However, the project is not just leading to faster internet speeds - it is also delivering a substantial employment boost by creating up to 1,800 jobs in the region, reports the Daily Post.

Ann Beynon, BT Director of Wales, said: "We are recruiting, we are taking on 200 apprentices and we expect those who are successful  will continue with BT.

"Those jobs are ring-fenced to Wales so they are very good opportunities for  people."
