VDSL2 Vectoring can boost download speeds to above 100Mbps.

Alcatel-Lucent has announced the global launch of technology that can boost the download speeds of existing fibre optic broadband services.

The telecoms firm explained its VDSL2 Vectoring solution allows internet service providers (ISPs) to "dramatically" increase the speed of copper access networks to 100Mbps and beyond.

Consequently, the company claimed its innovation will enable ISPs to make the best possible use of their infrastructure and reach customers "more quickly than ever before".

Dave Geary, president of Alcatel-Lucent's wireline division, said operators can use VDSL2 Vectoring to deliver new services and generate extra revenue.

"Our objective is to help operators … 'get to fast, faster'," he added. "This means shortening the time needed to recoup their investments and making it easier for them to meet various national broadband goals."

Earlier this year, Alcatel-Lucent's customer experience management solution was chosen by BT to support the expansion of its broadband, internet telephony and internet protocol TV services in the UK.
