Fibre optic broadband boost for Wales

Tuesday, October 1st 2013 by Paul France
BT has announced it will bring fibre optic broadband to another 206,000 Welsh premises by the end of spring 2015.

A fibre optic broadband connection will be available to 75 per cent of Wales by the end of spring 2015, according to BT.

The service provider has formed a deal with the Welsh government that will increase access to superfast speeds across the country in two phases.

A total of 120 communities will gain access to the technology by spring next year, pending any unforeseen technical difficulties.

As a result of the latest announcement, an additional 206,000 homes and businesses will have a connection installed a year later. BT claims the combination of the two projects will bring the service to a total of 480,000 properties.

It's all thanks to the Superfast Cymru project, which is being implemented alongside a BT commercial rollout that has seen an investment of £2.5 billion.

The overall aim is to introduce fibre optic connections to 96 per cent of the country by the time spring 2016 is over.
