FibreNet 10Gbps fibre broadband trial goes live in Liverpool

Liverpool businesses are being encouraged to take part in a trial of ultra-fast broadband.

Businesses in Liverpool are being given access to up to 10Gbps fibre optic broadband as part of the government-backed FibreNet project.

The service, thought to offer the fastest commercially available broadband speeds in the world, has now gone live in the north-west city as part of a pilot scheme, reports the Liverpool Daily Post.

AIMES Grid Services, which is leading the project, is now urging small businesses and other organisations to register their interest in the initiative and sign up for 12 months of free fibre broadband usage.

Malcolm Kennedy, cabinet member for regeneration and transport at Liverpool City Council, commented: "The Liverpool FibreNet project is part of our plans to support enterprise excellence, foster innovation and attract the brightest business minds."

According to figures published by Ofcom earlier this year, the average sync speed of the city's broadband connections is 9.5Mbps, while just over three-quarters of households across the city are able to access a super-fast broadband service.
