The company is planning to bring fibre optic broadband to five million rural homes and businesses.

Fujitsu's UK and Ireland chief executive Duncan Tait has said Brits could get access to the most advanced fibre optic broadband network in the world.

The tech giant has unveiled plans to roll out next-generation broadband to five million homes and businesses in rural parts of the country.

Announcing the news, Mr Tait said there is a "unique opportunity" to develop the world's best fibre network, benefiting consumers and the UK economy.

If the project is undertaken correctly, it will bring a choice of broadband services to householders who have previously been starved of a reliable connection, he stated.

TalkTalk, Virgin Media and Cisco will partner Fujitsu in delivering the infrastructure.

Mr Tait added: "We believe our approach, in collaboration with these major industry leaders, will provide a future proofed network for at least the next 20 to 30 years."

The news comes just days after BT announced it is bringing fibre broadband to 156 more exchange areas across the country by the end of 2012.
