More homes and businesses in Leeds and Chapeltown can now access superfast broadband.

A significant number of homes and businesses based in parts of Leeds city centre and Chapeltown can now access superfast broadband, network provider BT has announced.

Openreach engineers have been working to connect residential and commercial properties in the area, with around 9,500 currently able to access better broadband thanks to the rollout.

However, this figure is expected to increase to more than 21,000 as BT continues to deliver the high-speed technology, with Openreach planning to complete connectivity work in the region over the coming weeks.

BT Regional Director for Yorkshire and the Humber Tom Keeney commented: "More than 2.7 million homes and businesses across the UK are already using Openreach's new fibre network … Many more local residents in the Leeds area now have the opportunity to join them."

Overall, approximately 248,000 premises in and around Leeds can access superfast fibre optic broadband, but by the time BT finishes its regional rollout, this figure could rise to 270,000.

BT has invested £2.5 billion in bringing improved internet to the area to date.
