Lincs council planning to bring fibre broadband to 90% of homes

The local authority is attempting to secure £20 million of government funding to support its broadband plans.

Fibre optic broadband will be extended to as many as nine in ten homes in Lincolnshire under plans from the county council.

The local authority is set to ask Broadband Delivery UK for £20 million of funding, which will be combined with European investment to roll out fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) to between 85 and 90 per cent of households, reports This Is Lincolnshire.

Householders and business leaders who sign up for the FTTC service will be able to take advantage of download speeds of up to 40Mbps.

Justin Brown, head of enterprise at Lincolnshire County Council, said: "We'll then work on community-led solutions to improve things for the remaining homes and businesses.

"Residents can greatly improve our chances of success by showing their support."

The news comes just days after BT announced plans to bring fibre broadband to another 31,000 properties across the county, with the work expected to be completed during 2012.
