70,000 more premises are expected to be connected to fibre optic broadband by July.

The organisers of the Connecting Devon and Somerset fibre broadband rollout project have revealed the next group of locations that can expect to benefit.

Three exchanges in Exeter - namely Sowton, Pinhoe and Topsham - have discovered that they will be connected to superfast speeds by the end of July.

Outside of Exeter the areas of Braunton, Kingskerswell and Swimbridge in Devon, as well as Spaxton and North Petherton in Somerset, will also be upgraded as part of a drive to introduce fibre access to 70,000 more premises.

The scheme is a partnership between a number of councils in the region and service provider BT. Helped in no small part by a contribution from the government's Broadband Delivery UK fund, the new network has been the subject of an investment totalling £94 million.

Devon County Council's Cabinet Member for Economy and Growth Andrew Leadbetter said: "Businesses across Devon will now have the chance to grow and develop and compete on a more equal footing with their more urban competitors."
