An MSP for Midlothian has praised a move by BT that will bring fibre optic broadband to 2,700 properties.

The MSP for Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale Christine Grahame has praised a move that will introduce fibre optic broadband to an area of her constituency.

As part of a nationwide £2.5 billion project by BT, 2,700 homes and businesses in Gorebridge will gain access to superfast speeds.

Ms Grahame explained how the benefits of the new service would go beyond greater social connectivity, also positively affecting the area's economy.

She said: "High-speed digital connectivity is essential if businesses in the Gorebridge area are to compete effectively and protect and create jobs."

BT estimates the essential works involved in the upgrade will be completed by the end of spring 2014.

Gorebridge will follow nearby areas such as Dalkeith and Penicuik, which have already gained access to next-generation services.

By the time this latest rollout is completed, BT says nearly 30,500 premises in Midlothian will have access to fibre optic broadband.
