The technology will be brought to over 17,000 properties in the town.

Newbury has become the latest location to get access to BT's fibre optic broadband service.

The technology has gone live in the Berkshire town and is set to be rolled out to more than 17,000 homes and businesses in the area over the coming weeks.

As a result of this work, around 160,000 properties across the county either have super-fast broadband access or are due to be hooked up shortly.

BT has also announced plans to bring fibre broadband to 120,000 more Berkshire premises this year or at some point in 2012.

John Weaver, BT's regional director for the south-east, said Newbury is "joining the more than five million UK premises now passed by what we believe to be the world's fastest growing fibre network".

In March, the telecoms giant revealed its fibre-based broadband infrastructure had been extended to the Berkshire town of Woodley, with more than 8,000 householders and firms benefitting from the project.
