Plans to boost broadband connectivity in North Swindon have been approved.

Homes and businesses in North Swindon could soon be connected to improved broadband networks, following the approval of an ambitious project for the area.

This is Wiltshire reports an agreement has now been reached between North Swindon Borough Council and UKB Network to deliver 4G online connectivity to 99.4 per cent of homes in the area over the months ahead.

A £1.9 million investment will be required to deliver this improved connectivity, but once installed, the system will ensure download speeds across the borough will rise from 1.5 to 2 Mbps at present to 38 to 40 Mbps.

Chair of Chiseldon Parish Council Paul Walton told the news provider: "I run a business which employs 350 people and I can see the economic benefit of this. I urge Swindon Council to push forward with this and put Swindon back on the map."

The government has agreed to match £1.5 million of funding for the programme, with the funds that have not been matched being used to help deliver superfast broadband to the remaining 0.6 per cent of homes in the near future.
