Oxted earmarked for fibre broadband upgrade

Friday, March 1st 2013 by Miles Northrop
Oxted is set to be one of the first areas to benefit from a new partnership between Surrey County Council and BT that will see fibre broadband installed.

Oxted is set to be one of the first areas in Surrey to get access to super-fast fibre broadband after a deal between Surrey County Council and BT was agreed.

This will give 15,000 homes and business across the county greater access to a high-speed service by the end of September, the Tandridge Mirror reports.

The county's needs will be served by 14 new internet exchanges that will are set to be put in place in areas including Oxted, Godstone and South Godstone.

County council deputy leader Peter Martin said this agreement helps keep Surrey at the "forefront of the super-fast broadband rollout" in the country.

Bill Murphy, BT's next-generation access managing director, added: "This is a very exciting day for Surrey. Revealing the first communities set to get fibre broadband as a direct result of the partnership is an indication of how well the plan is progressing."

This announcement comes just days after the launch of a new website that helps businesses and households in the area keep up to date with the plans for the rollout of super-fast broadband in the coming months.
