Service providers have welcomed the introduction of a voucher scheme to help businesses in York to connect to fibre broadband.

The introduction of a voucher scheme to enable York businesses to connect to fibre broadband has been welcomed by providers who believe the service will bring great benefits to local firms.

CityFibre's - which operates York's fibre broadband network - Chief Executive Greg Mesch said: "The voucher scheme is the perfect opportunity for York's businesses to super-charge their connectivity."

BT's Regional Director for Yorkshire and Humber Tom Keeney added: "This exciting scheme is a vital step forward."

The £1 million voucher scheme allows York-based small and medium-sized enterprises to apply for tokens worth up to £3,000 to support themselves in connecting to the city's fibre optic broadband network.

Businesses also have the option of which supplier they would like to receive high-speed broadband from, getting to choose between BT, CityFibre and Virgin.

It is thought York could become one of the most digitally connected locations in Europe if a high number of organisations connect to the superfast service.
