Superfast broadband hailed by Wales Secretary

Thursday, January 9th 2014 by Paul France
The Wales Secretary has hailed a fibre broadband rollout project that has connected 100,000 premises.

The introduction of superfast broadband has been praised by the government's Minister for Wales David Jones.

He claimed the installation of the service to 100,000 homes and businesses through Superfast Cymru is a prime example of how the government's investment in the Broadband Delivery UK programme can make a difference to people's lives.

Mr Jones said: "Thanks to the investment made in Wales’ digital infrastructure by this government, we are well on our way to achieving a truly remarkable transformation in broadband provision in Wales."

The Secretary also made it clear that this was just the initial phase of the project, with a further funding boost of £10 million planned to bring fibre optic broadband to even more properties over the coming months.

Government officials have scheduled the completion of the project for 2017, by which time it is hoped 95 per cent of Welsh will be connected to the service.
