TalkTalk sees rise in demand for fibre broadband

Some 9,000 customers are signed up to super-fast broadband with TalkTalk.

TalkTalk has reported an increase in demand for its fibre optic broadband service during the first quarter of 2012.

In the three months to the end of March, an additional 4,000 customers had been provisioned, meaning the company's super-fast broadband subscriber base stood at 9,000.

Pre-registration for TalkTalk's up to 80Mbps fibre optic broadband product began in March after the internet service provider (ISP) successfully negotiated commercial terms with Openreach, BT's local access network business.

The first customers were signed up in April and the company is planning to begin actively promoting the next-generation broadband service during its new financial year, which began last month.

Dido Harding, TalkTalk's chief executive, said increasing sales of super-fast broadband will help the ISP achieve its targets on growth and margin.

On the launch of the service, the company's commercial director Tristia Clarke commented: "We expect our new super-fast fibre optic broadband to be very popular as it will allow the whole family to enjoy seamless connectivity and high upload and download speeds."
