The cable company is one of three providers to win a place on the public sector network procurement framework.

Fibre optic broadband provider Virgin Media Business has been awarded one of three places on the first public sector network (PSN) procurement framework.

The agreement, which is the first of its kind in the UK, will be used as a resource for public organisations to purchase approved technologies such as broadband and telecoms services.

Lee Hull, director of public sector at Virgin Media Business, said the launch of the Managed Telecommunications Convergence Framework is evidence that the PSN initiative is gathering pace.

Both central and local government departments are aware of the many benefits offered by the model, such as sharing services and reducing inefficiency, he claimed.

Mr Hull added: "We will continue to work with the Cabinet Office as the PSN evolves and firmly believe in the advantages it will bring government and the public."

Virgin Media Business was the first provider to receive an interim accreditation as part of the PSN programme following a thorough audit of its network security.
