The service has gone live in Peartree, Sholing and Woolston.

Virgin Media has delivered its ultra-fast fibre optic broadband service to parts of Southampton.

Residents in Sholing, Peartree and Woolston can now sign up for the product, which offers download speeds of up to 100Mbps, reports the Daily Echo.

These communities are the first parts of the south coast city to benefit from the rollout, with work set to continue as the cable company looks to connect around 80,000 properties in Southampton by December.

Locals will also be able to sign up for Virgin Media's next-generation TiVo-powered cable television platform as a result of the infrastructure improvements.

"We are delighted to be welcoming Southampton residents to the Virgin Media family," commented Peter Taddeo, the firm's executive director of sales.

"Southampton residents will truly be at the forefront of the digital revolution."

Virgin Media's national network has been constructed thanks to £13 billion of private investment and covers half of all homes in the UK.
