Wispa Ltd knocks BT fibre broadband plans

The internet service provider has said Wales should not miss out on fast broadband.

BT's fibre broadband rollout plans have come in for criticism from Wispa Ltd.

The internet service provider pointed out that BT is asking for £1 billion of funding to help deploy super-fast broadband, but that many rural parts of the UK will not be included in the work as the telecoms giant considers them to be economically unviable.

Richard Brown of Wispa Ltd insisted residents and businesses in Wales "deserve better" than to be excluded from the infrastructure improvements.

"We have to stop the virtual stampede across the border into England of our talented entrepreneurs just because there isn't decent connectivity or sufficient knowledge to pick an alternative provision," he remarked.

Despite Wispa Ltd's criticism, BT announced last month that it is planning to bring fibre optic broadband to 13,000 more homes and businesses in the south Wales town of Aberdare, with the work set to be completed in 2012 at the latest.
