Yorkshire residents push for fibre broadband

Tuesday, November 19th 2013 by Paul France
Residents in Cononley have held a meeting to try to bring fibre optic broadband to the village.

Residents from the village of Cononley in North Yorkshire have attended a meeting with BT and representatives from the NYnet broadband rollout project to force the issue regarding fibre broadband.

When BT announced it would be rolling out fibre optic services throughout the region, it stated a suitable location for a cabinet was needed before it could confirm that Cononley would be included.

After no location was found initially, it seemed as if the village would be excluded, leaving residents to persevere with a service that only operates at speeds between 2Mbps and 3Mbps, reports the Craven Herald.

But following the meeting, BT has now suggested a site at Cononley Park for the installation of the next-generation infrastructure.

Cononley Parish Council Chairman Lois Brown explained: "If we hadn't had that meeting, we probably wouldn't be getting this superior technology for our village at all."

The NYnet project is expected to bring superfast connection speeds to 90 per cent of the county by the end of 2014.
