The commercial trial of Zen's 100Mbps service has been launched.

Zen Internet has officially launched its first up to 100Mbps fibre optic broadband product, aimed at businesses and residential customers.

The telecoms firm is currently trialling its ultra-fast broadband service in four exchange areas - Bradwell Abbey, Highams Park, York and Chester South - and is in the process of deploying the technology to a further seven locations.

Andrew Saunders, head of product management and marketing at Zen Internet, said the company is already seeing the service deliver download speeds that are frequently above 90Mbps, more than ten times the UK average.

"We acknowledge that these new services are at a premium when compared to other broadband products, however they provide a step change increase in access speed," he added.

Speaking to PC Pro earlier this week, Mr Saunders expressed confidence that fibre broadband will become significantly more popular in the near future, although he stated he is unsure exactly when the technology will gain mass-market appeal.
