Alston Moor could gain 1Gbps fibre broadband

Ultra-fast fibre broadband speeds could be rolled out in Alston Moor.

Gigabit fibre optic broadband speeds could be rolled out to a rural Cumbrian community thanks to a partnership between Cybermoor Networks and Calix.

The Cybermoor super-fast broadband project has opted to utilise Calix's gigabit passive optical network technology in order to bring dramatically increased speeds to residents in the Alston Moor area.

Once the super-fast broadband infrastructure has been deployed to the most densely-populated parts of the community, it will be extended to more remote locations when additional funding becomes available.

Andy Lockhart, senior vice president of international sales and marketing at Calix, said: "Few areas in the UK are more remote and rural than Cumbria, yet even fewer areas in the country will be as wired for the future as Alston Moor."

The Cybermoor project aims to minimise the cost of deploying the fibre optic broadband infrastructure by enlisting help from local residents.

It believes this strategy will help the scheme save up to 75 per cent on the prices charged by major operators.
