Planning permission for six broadband street cabinets is being sought by BT in Burton.

BT has filed planning applications to install six fibre optic broadband street cabinets around Burton.

The telecoms giant is looking to roll out its super-fast fibre access (SFFA) service in the Staffordshire town, bringing download speeds of up to 40Mbps to residents and businesses, reports the Burton Mail.

Council chiefs are set to announce their ruling on the decision by Boxing Day.

A spokesman for BT described SFFA and the services it can deliver as representing "an exciting and important contribution" to the UK's broadband connectivity.

"Following the installation of the required cabinets, local residents and businesses within the exchange area will benefit significantly from these services," he added.

Some 47 per cent of households in Staffordshire currently have access to super-fast broadband, according to Ofcom figures published earlier this year.

Broadband uptake excluding next-generation connectivity stands at 66 per cent, but around a fifth of residents are stuck with speeds of less than 2Mbps.
