Up to 11,000 properties in Stamford will receive fibre broadband access from BT in the coming weeks.

Stamford and Birchwood are the first locations in Lincolnshire to receive access to BT's fibre optic broadband service.

Up to 11,000 homes and businesses in Stamford are set to be connected to the company's super-fast broadband network in the coming weeks after the local telephone exchange was upgraded months ahead of schedule.

Parts of Rutland are also connected to the Stamford exchange and BT took the opportunity to hail the Superfast Rutland campaign, which aims to get fibre broadband rolled out across the county.

Paul Bimson, regional partnership director for BT in the East Midlands, commented: "The arrival of super-fast broadband in Stamford is a huge boost for local homes and businesses. It will transform their experience of the internet."

The announcement comes shortly after the telecoms giant began work on upgrading the Skelmersdale exchange, with the project set to bring fibre broadband to almost 15,000 local properties.

West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper said she is "delighted" the technology is now available in the town.
