BT connects Brixton to fibre optic broadband

The first properties in Brixton have been hooked up to BT's fibre broadband infrastructure.

Brixton has become the latest area of London to gain access to BT's fibre optic broadband service.

When the telecoms giant completes its latest round of infrastructure upgrades in the coming weeks, the technology will be available to more than 31,000 homes and businesses in Brixton, boosting the number of properties in the capital with super-fast broadband access to around 2.25 million.

Further investment is also underway, with another 325,000 premises due to be connected to the service by the end of this year.

Leader of Lambeth Council Steve Reed said the move is an "important step forward" for Brixton, allowing many local residents to access faster internet services.

"It will also help businesses operate more efficiently, which is important at a time of economic uncertainty," he added.

The news comes just a matter of weeks after BT rolled out fibre broadband to the first premises in ten more locations across the capital, including Walthamstow, Southall, Twickenham and Upton Park.
