Some 48,000 more properties in the county will benefit from the rollout.

Tens of thousands more homes and businesses in Hertfordshire will be able to connect to BT's fibre optic broadband infrastructure over the coming months.

A further 48,000 properties across the county are due to be connected by autumn 2012, taking the total number of premises in Hertfordshire with fibre broadband access to more than 400,000.

According to the telecoms giant, a super-fast broadband line allows subscribers to do "much more" on the internet. BT claimed a family could simultaneously browse the web, download a movie, watch a catch-up TV service and play games online via multiple devices.

Dave Hughes, BT's regional director for the east of England, said: "Our latest investment in Hertfordshire will propel internet users at home and at work into the 21st century fast lane."

Elsewhere in the south-east, the company has also announced plans to extend its fibre broadband coverage to an additional 163,000 commercial and residential properties in Essex over the next year.
