BT extends Wiltshire fibre broadband coverage

Calne, Devizes and Melksham are the latest Wiltshire communities to gain access to BT's fibre broadband service.

Three more Wiltshire communities are set to be connected to BT's fibre optic broadband service.

Calne will see more than 6,500 homes and businesses hooked up to super-fast broadband over the coming weeks, while around 8,000 properties apiece in Devizes and Melksham will also gain access to the technology.

BT is planning to extend fibre broadband access in Wiltshire further in the next few months, with Warminster and Westbury due to be connected at some point in 2012.

South-west regional director for the telecoms giant Jon Reynolds said the company is eager to hold discussions with councils, regional development agencies and other public bodies with a view to further increasing its super-fast broadband coverage.

"Households and businesses switching to super-fast broadband will soon be experiencing the internet as they have never experienced it before," he added.

Earlier this month, BT announced almost 50,000 properties in Swindon, Blunsdon and Toothill will receive access to faster fibre broadband next year, with top download speeds set to rise to 80Mbps.
