BT fibre broadband adverts banned by ASA

BT has been rapped for claiming to offer "unbeatable" broadband speeds.

An advertising campaign for BT's Infinity fibre optic broadband products has been banned following complaints that it was misleading.

Virgin Media and three complainants challenged the telecoms giant's claim that its super-fast broadband service allows customers to share videos and images at "unbeatable" speeds.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld this view and also rapped BT for describing its fibre optic broadband connection as being "four times faster", on the grounds that the basis of this comparison was not explained.

This information was only readily available by clicking on the online ad and visiting BT's website.

Explaining the decision, the ASA said: "The information should have been included in the ad itself. Because it was not, we considered the claim had not been substantiated and concluded it was misleading."

BT was also rapped in February after claiming in a TV ad that it offers the most reliable wireless connection in the UK, with the ASA declaring that this could not be backed up.
