More parts of the south-east have been passed by BT's fibre broadband network.

BT has set its fibre optic broadband service live in more communities across the south-east.

The technology is being rolled out to more than 36,000 homes and businesses across Surrey, with Cranleigh, Dorking, Epsom and Redhill among the latest locations to benefit from the work.

Engineers are due to finish the installation in the coming weeks, by which time the number of properties in Surrey with access to fibre optic broadband will have risen to more than 230,000.

By spring 2013, the telecoms giant is planning to deliver the service to another 95,000 local properties.

Across the south-east, BT has already extended super-fast broadband access to more than 1.5 million premises and a further one million are set to be upgraded later this year.

John Weaver, regional director for the south-east at BT, said: "Fast and reliable internet connections are an essential part of our national infrastructure, whether we want them for boosting our businesses, delivering essential public services, education online or entertainment at home."
