Council chiefs have hailed BT's decision to improve broadband connectivity in Merstham.

BT's plan to boost fibre optic broadband coverage in Surrey has been welcomed by local council chiefs.

The telecoms giant has announced it will significantly increase its super-fast broadband footprint in the area by spring 2013, with Merstham among the communities set to benefit from the work.

Once the rollout is complete, more than 2.6 million homes and businesses across the south-east will have access to BT's fibre optic broadband service.

According to local newspaper Redhill and Reigate Life, Merstham councillor Mark Brunt expressed delight that the company has recognised the need for improved broadband connectivity in the area.

"I led a successful campaign in 2002 to get Merstham connected to broadband and so I am really pleased to see that it is finally going to get the broadband boost the community needs," he added.

The announcement comes just days after BT revealed its fibre broadband service will soon go live to a further 36,000 properties across Surrey, including homes and businesses in Cranleigh, Dorking, Epsom and Redhill.
