BT in the running for all public fibre broadband projects

All eight of the government's current super-fast broadband schemes could be delivered by BT.

Communications Minister Ed Vaizey has revealed that BT is applying for every one of the currently launched public-funded fibre optic broadband projects.

Procurement processes are underway on eight of these schemes so far and the telecoms giant is in the running for each of them.

The company has regularly promised to extend super-fast broadband coverage to 90 per cent of the UK if it succeeds in winning the bulk of public funding for the project.

"BT are bidding for the eight projects currently in procurement and are one of the suppliers bidding to be included on the Broadband Delivery Framework (BDF)," Mr Vaizey explained.

He added that the BDF is likely to be used for the majority of remaining rural broadband procurements.

Several high-profile telecoms firms have quit the government's broadband funding framework in recent months, with Fujitsu and Geo Networks both deciding to pull out of the tender process in Wales.

According to PC Pro, Fujitsu withdrew due to fears that risk levels in the Welsh government's contract were too high.
