The town of Cambuslang will be hooked up to BT's fibre broadband infrastructure.

BT has announced thousands of properties in the Scottish town of Cambuslang are set to gain access to its fibre optic broadband service over the coming months.

The telecoms giant will extend its super-fast broadband coverage to around 9,700 homes and businesses in the area, which is located on the south-eastern outskirts of Glasgow, reports the Rutherglen Reformer.

Upgrades are set to be completed next year, taking the number of Scottish premises served by BT's fibre broadband network to more than 685,500.

The development has been welcomed by Rutherglen MSP James Kelly, who said next-generation broadband could potentially help many individuals and local businesses.

"I know that this is BT's biggest ever fibre announcement in Scotland and I am glad to see Cambuslang benefiting from this infrastructure investment," he added.

Last month, the company revealed the community of Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders will be the first part of the country to receive access to its fibre-to-the-home service, which offers speeds of up to 100Mbps.
