BT sees 'strong demand' for fibre broadband across Cornwall

More than 24,000 subscribers in Cornwall have signed up to super-fast broadband.

BT has seen strong demand from homes and businesses in Cornwall for its fibre optic broadband service, according to Ranulph Scarbrough, director of the company's Superfast Cornwall programme.

Speaking to Telecoms.com, Mr Scarbrough revealed that more than 24,000 customers have already signed up for the service through 32 different providers. Of this total, over 3,000 are small businesses.

He commented: "Businesses continue to do great things with these connections."

Across the county, fibre broadband coverage now stands at around 80 per cent, with BT expecting to complete the rollout next year - by which time approximately 95 per cent of local properties should be able to access the technology.

As well as improving broadband connectivity in Cornwall, the programme is taking fibre optic infrastructure to the Isles of Scilly, one of the most isolated communities in Europe.

"This innovative scheme will re-use two international service cables while navigating one of Europe's most environmentally protected zones," Mr Scarbrough explained.
