More south Wales properties will be connected to super-fast broadband by BT over the coming months.

A major expansion of fibre optic broadband in the Llanelli and Swansea areas of south Wales has been announced by BT.

As part of the telecoms giant's latest investment in super-fast broadband, the service will be rolled out to another 60,000 homes and businesses by spring 2013.

Llanelli, Port Talbot, Ravenhill and Swansea are just some of the communities to be involved in the deployment, which will take the number of properties in south Wales with fibre broadband access to 540,000.

Rhyl in north Wales is also set to be upgraded over the coming months, BT revealed.

Chris Holley, leader of Swansea Council and chair of the South West Wales Economic Forum, said: "This is great news for the area as better and quicker connectivity will boost businesses and families who rely on broadband to carry out everyday activities."

Earlier this month, BT's fibre broadband service went live to the first commercial and residential premises in the Cardiff district of Llanrumney.
