Over 95,000 Cornish properties now have access to BT's super-fast broadband service.

BT has rolled out fibre optic broadband to more than 95,000 properties in Cornwall as part of a £132 million joint initiative with the county council and the EU.

The Superfast Cornwall project has now seen the technology deployed to over one-third of the county, with fibre broadband connectivity available to homes and businesses in 52 of the 99 local telephone exchange areas.

Helston, St Ives, Harrowbarrow and Looe are among the latest communities being upgraded.

Ranulf Scarbrough, programme director for Superfast Cornwall at BT, said the telecoms giant's engineering teams have been working "flat out" to meet the growing demand for fibre optic broadband.

"The technology is already making an important contribution to Cornwall's future success, boosting the competitiveness of businesses whilst offering new educational and entertainment opportunities for households," he added.

Last week, BT announced it is creating 150 new full-time engineering positions to support its national super-fast broadband deployment, with the recruits set to take up their roles from next month.
