Cheryl Gillan calls for Welsh fibre broadband investment

The Welsh Secretary said the country's government is now responsible for broadband deployments.

Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan has expressed satisfaction at the Assembly Government's commitment to fibre optic broadband funding.

In an interview with the Daily Post, Ms Gillan was quizzed on whether she feels enough is being done to tackle the issue of slow broadband speeds across the country.

The question was prompted by a Wales Office study that found frustration over broadband links is one of the biggest concerns of residents in rural communities, along with overly strict regulation and threats to local services.

Ms Gillan stressed the UK government is already investing almost £60 million in the rollout of faster broadband and said it is now up to the Welsh administration to match this funding and deliver next-generation access for all.

"I am pleased to see that the Welsh government have confirmed that they will continue to ensure that there is fair and equal access to higher broadband speeds across the whole of Wales," she remarked.

The Welsh Secretary added no one should be left behind in the attempt to deploy Europe's best super-fast broadband network.
