Tavish Scott calls for more rural fibre broadband funding

MSP Tavish Scott wants more fibre broadband funding to be allocated to rural parts of Shetland.

Tavish Scott, MSP for Shetland, has expressed concerns about the way funding for fibre broadband is allocated to communities.

Mr Scott wants changes to be introduced with regard to this matter, to ensure that residents and businesses based in the more rural parts of the area with the worst broadband connections have access to the funding, Shetland News reports.

The politician expressed these views following a meeting with Community Broadband Scotland, when he said that future fibre internet investment should place a greater focus on such communities.

He explained: "Whilst news of further funding for high-speed broadband in Shetland is certainly welcome, it simply does not seem right that those who currently have a poor service, or no service at all, should be left further behind."

However, BT has said it plans to connect up to 76 per cent of premises in Shetland throughout 2015 and 2016.

Mr Scott's comments follow earlier concerns about the issue, with rural Shetland residents recently telling BT Scotland Director Brendan Dick that they were not happy about being left behind in the broadband rollout.
