CityFibre completes York fibre broadband network

The dark fibre optic network in York has been finished by CityFibre.

CityFibre has announced the completion of its project to connect more than 100 council buildings to a fibre optic broadband network.

The infrastructure has been deployed as part of an eight-year, £13.7 million deal between CityFibre and City of York Council, which has delivered super-fast connectivity to the area.

Council workers are now able to take advantage of a wide array of telecoms services, including faster broadband, video conferencing, advanced telephony and urban traffic management.

Roy Grant, head of ICT at City of York Council, said CityFibre's network is fully future-proofed thanks to its use of dark fibre infrastructure.

"This new network has the potential to help us reach our broadband coverage target set by the government and we estimate that we will achieve 95 per cent of this by the end of 2014/15," he added.

Last month, CityFibre revealed it had completed its dark fibre link in Dundee as part of a £270 million redevelopment of the Scottish city.

Dundee City Council's headquarters were connected to a second data centre by the fibre broadband link.
