Connecting Cambridgeshire brings fibre broadband to Peterborough

More homes and businesses in Peterborough will be able to access fibre broadband thanks to Connecting Cambridgeshire.

The first green roadside cabinets have been upgraded to be able to receive fibre broadband in Peterborough as part of the Connecting Cambridgeshire rollout programme.

Homes and businesses in the Newark and Hampton areas can now access the superfast service thanks to the rollout initiative.

This is in addition to the 63,000 Peterborough premises that have already been able to connect to the technology as part of BT's nationwide commercial rollout.

Connecting Cambridgeshire has also recently secured £4.5 million in government funding to invest in its Destination Digital project, which offers local businesses financial support in connecting to fibre broadband and getting the most out of it.

Marco Cereste, Leader of Peterborough City Council said: "Broadband is an essential part of life these days and that's why we have been working hard with partners to improve speeds in the area."

He added that he is "delighted" the superfast service is now available throughout additional Peterborough communities and looks forward to even more local roadside cabinets being upgraded.

It is hoped that by December 2015, 98 per cent of residential and commercial properties in the county will have been connected to faster broadband thanks to Connecting Cambridgeshire.
