Connecting Cambridgeshire fibre broadband rollout reaches 11,000 premises

Fibre broadband is now available to businesses in East Cambridgeshire.

More than 11,000 homes and businesses have been connected to superfast fibre optic broadband under the Connecting Cambridgeshire rollout programme, with firms in the east of the county being the latest to benefit from access to the high-speed technology.

In recent weeks, over 40 green roadside cabinets have been upgraded to fibre, with many more planned to go live over the next few months, including in rural parts of the region.

Companies in East Cambridgeshire can also apply for free support to aid them in installing better broadband, with grants of up to £4,000 available.

Chairman of Cambridgeshire County Economy and Environment Committee Councillor Ian Bates commented: "Faster connectivity will transform the way people can work and do business, as well as improving access to vital services, which will boost our rural communities."

Mr Bates added the rollout programme is currently on track to deliver the superfast service to 98 per cent of premises in Cambridgeshire before the end of 2015.

In addition, having access to high-speed internet will enable local firms to be better positioned to compete in global markets, meaning better broadband could have potential benefits for the county's economy.
