Cornwall residents call for fibre broadband access

Householders in Cornwall are hoping to persuade BT to boost super-fast broadband access in the area.

Residents in Cornwall are supporting an initiative to encourage BT to roll out fibre optic broadband in the villages between Helston and Penzance.

The telecoms giant is working on a major deployment of super-fast broadband in the county and this month announced it has extended the technology to more than one-third of homes and businesses in the area.

Speaking to the West Briton, Godolphin resident Andy Kirk, who works for defence technology and security firm Qinetiq, said he has been unable to utilise bandwidth-heavy services such as video conferencing due to his poor internet connectivity.

At present, Mr Kirk only receives broadband speeds of around 1Mbps.

"Web access has also been very slow, often dropping the connection completely," he explained. "Super-fast broadband would be a godsend to people like myself."

John Martin and Keith Reynolds, who also live in the area, have been handing out leaflets calling for residents to express their interest in receiving access to fibre optic broadband services.
